Building Foundations and Futures: The Journey of Model Art Institute

The institute was founded by a trio of passionate individuals: Shri S.K. Thosar, Shri R.S. Patkar, and Shri M.S. Joshi, who sought to foster a vibrant community of artists. Over the years, the institution has expanded its mission through the formation of the Model Art Education Society in 1956, with prominent figures like Shri M.V. Bhave and Shri R.P. Joshi contributing to its development.

The foundation of the Model Art Institute was laid in a period when structured art education was virtually nonexistent in Mumbai. The city’s status as one of India's major media hubs has profoundly influenced Model Art's evolution, driving the institute to respond to the growing need for skilled artists. Despite facing initial financial hurdles, the institute garnered token government grants, which kick started their growth

Initially offering part-time courses in drawing, painting, and commercial art, the institute provided students with access to a library and lectures. A significant milestone in its history occurred in 1960, when full-time courses were introduced, marking a commitment to comprehensive art education. The shift from foundational skills in drawing and painting to include commercial art and their latest integration of the Visual Communication program demonstrate the institute's commitment to staying relevant in an ever-evolving industry

Technology has significantly influenced art education at Model Art, particularly with the launch of the Visual Communication program. This program incorporates digital tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, multimedia applications, and interactive platforms. By combining traditional art techniques with modern technologies, Model Art is preparing students for careers in graphic design, animation, web development, and multimedia production. Additionally, the institute organizes studio visits for students, providing exposure to both 3D and 2D animation and enhancing their practical learning experiences.
